What Are Deductible Contributions?

Deductible contributions include money or property given to non-profit schools, hospitals, churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, other religious organizations, federal government, state & local governments, public parks, recreational facilities, public charities such as Salvation Army, Red Cross, Boy/Girl Scouts, and War veterans groups.

For charitable travels, travel expenses such as transportation, meals and lodging are deductible if there is not a significant element of personal pleasure, recreation or vacation in the travel.

If you are a delegate to a church convention, you can deduct unreimbursed expenses of attending. You must be a delegate and not merely attending on your own.

You can also deduct volunteer out-of-pocket expenses when serving a qualified organization.
